![]() After four months, Rosedale abruptly stepped down from the Interim CEO position. In 2010, Kingdon was replaced by Rosedale, who took over as interim CEO. Rosedale announced Mark Kingdon as the new CEO effective May 15, 2008. although he had announced plans to step down from his position as Linden Lab CEO and to become chairman of Linden Lab's board of directors instead in March 2008. Second Life was honored at the Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards for advancing the development of online sites with user-generated content in 2008, adding to the media attention. The maximum concurrency (number of avatars inworld) recorded was set at 88,200 in the first quarter of 2009. Nevertheless, the platform continued to grow rapidly, and by January 2008, residents spent a total of 28,274,505 hours "inworld" and on average 38,000 residents were logged in at any moment. ![]() One of the principal developers, Cory Ondrejka, was forced to resign as chief technology officer in December 2007, with Rosedale citing irreconcilable differences in the way the company was run. At the same time, the service saw a period of exponential growth of its user base. By that time, Anshe Chung had become Second Life 's poster child and symbol for the economic opportunities that the virtual world offers to its residents. Second Life began to receive significant media attention in 20, including a cover story in BusinessWeek magazine featuring the virtual world and Second Life avatar Anshe Chung. Although he was familiar with the metaverse of Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash, Rosedale has said that his vision of virtual worlds predates that book, and that he conducted early virtual world experiments during his college years at the University of California, San Diego, where he studied physics. That effort eventually transformed into the better known, user-centered Second Life. ![]() That vision changed into the software application Linden World, in which people participated in task-based games and socializing in a three-dimensional online environment. In its earliest form, the company struggled to produce a commercial version of the hardware, known as "The Rig", which in prototype form was seen as a clunky steel contraption with computer monitors worn on shoulders. Philip Rosedale formed Linden Lab in 1999 with the intention of developing computer hardware to allow people to become immersed in a virtual world. 9.7 Fraud and intellectual property protection.8.6 The Emerald client and in-world logging scripts.8.5 Griefing and denial of service attacks.Second Life is intended for people ages 16 and over, with the exception of 13–15-year-old users, who are restricted to the Second Life region of a sponsoring institution (e.g., a school). Second Life also has its own virtual currency, the Linden Dollar (L$), which is exchangeable with real world currency. The platform principally features 3D-based user-generated content. ![]() They can explore the world (known as the grid), meet other residents, socialize, participate in both individual and group activities, build, create, shop, and trade virtual property and services with one another. Second Life users, also called ' residents', create virtual representations of themselves, called avatars, and are able to interact with places, objects and other avatars. The virtual world can be accessed freely via Linden Lab's own client software or via alternative third-party viewers. In many ways, Second Life is similar to massively multiplayer online role-playing games nevertheless, Linden Lab is emphatic that their creation is not a game: "There is no manufactured conflict, no set objective". Growth eventually stabilized, and by the end of 2017 the active user count had declined to "between 800,000 and 900,000". Developed and owned by the San Francisco-based firm Linden Lab and launched on June 23, 2003, it saw rapid growth for some years and in 2013 it had approximately one million regular users. Second Life is an online multimedia platform that allows people to create an avatar for themselves and then interact with other users and user created content within a multi player online virtual world.

![]() When searching for cabernets, you may find some bottles sealed with a cork and others with a screw cap. Older bottles should be decanted for an up to an hour, but failing that, let the wine sit and breathe in your glass before enjoying. It’s best enjoyed at or just below room temperature (between 60☏ and 68☏) in an oversize wine glass. It’s worth knowing the ideal way to serve cabernet sauvignon. If you’re new to cabs and want to go to the source, be sure to try a bottle from the Bordeaux region of France. For example, cabs from Northern California may have a slight mint or tobacco taste, while those from South America may feature green peppercorns. While all areas share common traits, each region adds subtle notes of flavor. ![]() Regionsĭue to the versatility of the grape, cabernet sauvignon can be made around the world. Cabs may also be oaky or woody, with some cabs predominantly fruity and others smokier. This quality makes the taste of the wine fuller and bolder. ![]() Tasting notesĬabernet sauvignon has a predominant taste of black fruits, from currants to plums, berries to cherries. The body of a wine is made up of a combination of the aforementioned traits. Lighter wines are usually easier to drink and go down more quickly, while full-bodied wines tend to be enjoyed more deliberately. One way to notice higher alcohol content is by how much the wine warms the back of your throat.īody: Cabernet sauvignon is a full-bodied red wine, a term that refers to a combination of the complexity, texture, and taste of the wine. Cabs are a little higher, with an average of 13.5% to 15% alcohol by volume (ABV). Most cabs have medium acidity, less than white wine but more than coffee.Īlcohol: An average glass of wine contains between 11% and 13% alcohol. This will likely be the first thing you notice when tasting wine.Īcid: Tartness in wine is caused by acidity. Sweet: Cabs tend to be dry, but some, especially the less expensive ones, may have a hint of sweetness. Tannins tend to dry out your mouth, but high tannin levels can add longevity, complexity, and balance to wine. Tannins are primarily found in red wine, particularly cabernet. They’re also found in wood and grapes, which is how they end up in wines. You’ll find them in several different foods, including dark chocolate, certain nuts, whole spices, and tea leaves. These are the five general characteristics of wine and how cabernet sauvignon fits into the categories.īitter: Tannins produce a dry, bitter taste. While cabernet sauvignons can come in many different forms, they all generally share some commonalities. The United States, Spain, Australia, and Chile are among the many other producers. While France is the predominant maker, they barely make up a quarter of the world’s cabernet sauvignon. Our buying guide and recommendations can help break down the important details so you can go forth on your wine journey with the proper knowledge. Cabernet is often paired with meals, particularly smoked meats, beef, lamb, and hard cheeses.Īs there are many varieties and blends of wine, and many different vineyards of each type, it’s important to know what you like or may like, and how to discern what wine is best for you and your lifestyle. Cabernet was created in the 1600s in France as a blend of sauvignon blanc and cabernet franc, but today it’s made around the world, and as such, is the most popular wine variety in the world. Among the most diverse and embraced types is cabernet sauvignon, a red wine grape variety that is a relatively new wine (emphasis on “relatively”) and easy to make.Ĭabernet sauvignon (pronounced “kab-er-nay saw-vin-yawn”) wines are full-bodied reds with high tannin levels and moderate acidity. Ideal for winding down the day, pairing with a meal, or enjoying with friends, wine is one of the most popular and oldest drinks in the world, appealing to both connoisseurs and casual sippers, old and (not too) young alike. ![]() KidLogger claims to give you a list of all the URLs your child visits, along with how much time they spent on each website. Cellular signal boosters work in the five bands that are used by pretty much every other carrier, but not with Sprint’s fairly oddball ones. Their technology is not only unlike any other carrier in the US, it’s unlike any carrier in the world today, based as it is on older, 2000s era tech and some draft 4G technology.Īdd to that, instead of buying wireless spectrum in the same ranges as AT&T and Verizon, they’ve bought some truly oddball chunks of radio waves for their high-speed network. The company isn’t always easy for a techie like me to like, because they’ve made some really wacky decisions. Now let’s add everything and commit it: $ git add. It could just as well be extensions like *.psd or *.mp4, or a handful of paths. In this case, everything in the assets folder. Simple, yet hugely different: tell LFS what kind of files we’ll treat separately: $ git lfs track "assets/*" Same first step, which is to invite git-lfs into the repository: $ git lfs install A long list of files will go slowly since they’re transferred one at a time, but my experience has been pretty solid 1. Success! It’s easy enough to clone the repository and use git annex sync -content to get everything synced up. We can use the same trick from above to confirm that a given PNG now lives in more than one place: git annex whereis 04-day-glow.png (2 copies)ġd3c732a-ff9a-490e-a0c8-18ee13694c7a - "GitLab" Sent 1093758 bytes received 42 bytes 128682.35 bytes/secīefore (as seen above) and after the binary transfer, git-annex will make sure the file metadata is properly synced as well. Now let’s actually sync the file data: $ git annex sync -contentĮach file will be copied with a progress report that looks like this: copy assets/01-north-pole-daylight.png copy assets/01-north-pole-daylight.png (checking origin.) (to origin.) This can be useful while exploring and figuring out what’s going on. We can ask git-annex where a certain file exists: git annex whereis 04-day-glow.png (1 copy)ħ58aaecf-f502-44be-8854-03819db671d6. Annex knows they’re on the local machine, but that’s the only place they exist so far. Writing objects: 100% (3/3), 282 bytes | 0 bytes/s, done.Ĭritically important here is that the PNG files are not yet at the origin, only symbolic links that point to them. (You can easily undo this if you ever need to, restoring the files and getting rid of the annex.) Push it all: $ git push origin The files are turned into symbolic links that point to data in. Once git-annex is installed, we need to configure our repository to use it: $ git annex initĪdd our one normal file as usual: $ git add test.mdĪdd our images to the annex: $ git annex add assets/* Our Fake ProjectĪ markdown file and four PNGs that we’re going to treat as large files: Let’s take an identical set of files and commit them using each. It otherwise blends in after minimal configuration. If you check in a file (with a normal git add whatever.mp4), the magic happens via a pre-push hook where LFS will check your watch list and spring into action if needed. Tack it on to your repository, tell it what kind of files to watch, and then pretty much forget about it. Git LFS is at the other end of things: a bit nicer-looking, a bit more straightforward, and significantly simpler. The git-annex project site reveals a lot: plenty of features, updates, discussions, and enough threads that some sort of trail off. It’s easy enough to check in files and sync them among various locations, but there are also testing tools, a web-based GUI, and lots of options you can use in different situations. In other words, my experience with Annex is that it’s full-featured and a bit less focused in its approach. ![]() ![]() Git LFS is more like your large file personal assistant, working alongside you to keep track of things you’ve pointed out. You’ll need to walk up to ask your question or return your book, but the librarian can help you in a variety of ways by getting books moved around, checking up on things, and generally being a pro at cataloging stuff. Think of Git Annex as an experienced librarian waiting at the information desk. GitHub opted to support Git LFS, which I’ve only started poking at now that GitLab decided to support it, too.īut which one to use? Each will help you solve that large-file problem in a slightly different way. ![]() I’ve been working with Git Annex thanks to GitLab’s adoption early this year. “Idiot,” they snarked, begrudgingly fixing your mistake while secretly acknowledging that you had a point. If you would like me to reprogram some of the keys before I ship the keypad, I'm happy to do it for an extra $25 (see current keybindings here.I can map any button on the keypad into a specific keystroke or series of keystrokes or mappable joystick button). As I mentioned above, there are a few keypads that have a small issue with them (either a single joystick/gamepad button doesn't work, a few of the keys are temperamental and need to be pressed in a specific way, or there is some interference between the two dials) and I'm asking $250 for one of these units (if you're interested in one of these, let me know and I'll tell you all about the friendly gremlins that live in these ones). I'm asking $300 plus shipping for each USB keypad unit. This being said, I don't know what these keypads have been through before they got to me, so I can't make any promises about how they'll hold up in the future but I have to imagine that your simpit or desktop is a much more hospitable environment than in the air or on a flightdeck or tarmac somewhere. I've put them all thorough some pretty thorough testing and have pulled out a few units that have a minor issue (see below for more on this). There are some minor dings and dents that give some character to the metal housings, but nothing serious. Most of what you see is just paint that's been scratched away revealing the metal underneath. For the most part, this roughness is only cosmetic. Here's a side-by-side comparison of one of the nicer units I have for sale with one of the rougher ones. ![]() Comments on my earlier posts suggest this kind of CDU was installed in a wide range of aircraft, including C-130s, AC-130s, EA-6Bs, E-8Cs, CH-47s, H-53s, and H-65s, and I'm sure a load of other similar aircraft as well.Īs you can imagine, the keypads I have for sale here come in a range of cosmetic conditions. When I got them, most of them were pretty dirty and I've given them all good clean. ![]() The screen would have been visible through the large hole in the center of the keypad and the eight arrow keys around the window would have been used to interact with prompts on-screen. These would have been installed on the front of a control display unit in the cockpit of an aircraft and used to input coordinates, navigate menus, adjust settings, etc. This means they've all had use-lives before they came to me that I can only guess at. The keypads themselves are military surplus. Otherwise, you get which ever keypad you get. If you have a strong preference either way, let me know and I'll see what I can do (first come, first serve). Most of these keypads have keys with a short travel distance and fairly flat, hollow clicking sound, but a few have slightly taller keys with a springier push. If you have a simpit or something else you'd want to mount this on, the keypad can be unscrewed from the enclosure and you'd be free to come up with your own mounting solution.įor the curious, here's a few videos of me pushing some buttons to give you a sense of the tactile feel of these keypads. The keypads support key presses and holds, as well as a few simultaneous key presses. Inside the plastic and aluminum enclosures, these are powered by a Teensy 2.0 USB board and connected to a computer via a USB B cable (not included).
